Discover 3 Secrets to improve your Saffron production Quality

What does affect Saffron Taste, Color and Scent?
How can you improve/boost these features?

I think the main goal of EVERY Saffron producer, either professional or not, is to obtain the best organoleptic impact possible.

Today I'll reveal you the Magic formula!

Seriuously, I suggest to be very very diffident from any people who promise a shorter path to a very complicate thing.

No magic formulas are allowed!

As Agronomist, I always remember to everybody that every plant is a living organism.
It's not a matter of cutting perfectly pieces of steel in a factory.

Living organism are related to the Environment.

Environmnent is:

  • soil composition and structure
  • air composition
  • water coming from rain and from soil
  • animals
  • fungi
  • bacteria
  • temperature
  • humidity
  • weather
  • pollution
  • human impact
  • thousand of invisible molecules
And each of these factors in turn are influenced by hundreds of other factors.

So, to resume, EVERY BIOLOGICAL ACTIVITY has a huge variability and complexity that are impossible to understand perfectly and completely. Luckily, I say.

According to what I've just said,

what can we do to improve the quality of a cultivation and its products?

We can do lot of things.

I'm resuming, what in my producer experience, are THE 3 MAIN PARAMETERS to consider in order to IMPROVE/BOOST Saffron Quality.

1)STUDY deeply your soil.

  • Do analyze your soil by a lab.
  • Make read and understand the results by a really qualified agronomist.
  • Don't try to read each parameter of analysis individually, and don't take number as a matter of fact.
  • Read the WHOLE.
  • Every single data has no meaning without understanding the whole.
For example: a data of low Iron content, could instead be ok depending on your type of soil and on your cultivation purposes.
Avoid to think that every "low" result means you have to correct artificially it or think to push through synthetic fertilizers.

soil structure

2)Keep safe the SOIL structure.

  • Regardless of whether your soil is clayey or sandy, or every type in the middle, respect the natural structure.
  • Adapt your work to what the soil naturally is.
  • Never take a prepacked solution you've read around, expecially on many so called specialized blogs: try it by yourself and adapt/modify every idea to your own situation.
  • Never pretend your mechanical work could make a clayey soil draining as sandy is, or make a sandy soil fine in structure as a clayey soil is.

soil profile

3)Keep safe the BIODIVERSITY (under and above soil surface).

  • If you respect you natural soil microrganism composition, your soil will return you many satisfactions.
  • Avoid: pesticides and herbicides. Those substances kill the natural biodiversity, and impoverishes your soil capability to feed your plants.
  • At the end, fertility depends on bacteria and fungi composition, beacuse they're responsible for organic matter and humus production. In other words, for natural plant nutrition.
  • Keep in mind that you have to pander the natural equilibrium of your cultivation.

Any question is wellcome!
